Psychotherapy for Patients with Borderline Personality Disorders

Nature of Event: Dinner and Panel Presentation/Discussion for Clinical and Academic Faculty Members of the Psychotherapy Program as well as Residents in the UBC Department of Psychiatry.

Guest Panelist: Dr. Frank Yeomans

Description of Panel Presentation / Discussion: Panelist will receive, in advance, written descriptions of vignettes dealing with psychiatric practice and patients with borderline personality disorder. Copies of these vignettes will be distributed during the dinner. The moderator will invite the panelist to comment on how the situations could be conceptualized and managed. The audience will be involved early and throughout, as the moderator will ask for questions and comments on each vignette in turn, before the next one is introduced. Audience interaction will be encouraged.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To increase familiarity with what has been found in the scientific literature on psychotherapy for patients with borderline personality disorder and the limits of those findings.
  2. Mutual and interactive learning: to exchange opinions with colleagues while examining typical clinical and teaching decisions that have to be faced in this area.
  3. To provide content that is relevant to these objectives, i.e. the objectives in 1 and 2 above.

Accreditation: We have applied to the UBC Division of Continuing Professional Development and Knowledge Translation to have this event is an accredited as a Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
