The primary research
objective of the Psychotherapy Program is to determine which psychotherapeutic
treatments are the most effective for different patient problems. A
secondary research objective is to understand the mechanisms that underlie
differential effectiveness. We are dedicated to using the highest scientific
and professional standards to achieve these ends. Program members study
the most current and successful psychotherapeutic techniques available
in an effort to advance the research, clinical, and educational goals
of the UBC Psychotherapy Program. Several different strategies are used
to investigate the effectiveness of different psychotherapies and their
change mechanisms. These include randomized controlled trials, process
analyses, and comprehensive case examinations. A wide variety of short-term,
time-limited psychotherapies, that represent different theoretical orientations
(e.g., psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, interpersonal) and treatment
formats (e.g., individual, group, partial hospitalization), are studied.
Government (federal, provincial) organizations, private foundations,
and local hospitals fund our research.
